DEPOSIT—An early morning explosion leveled a 70-foot tower at the Plum Creek Timber Company fiberboard plant in Deposit Friday.

There were no injuries from the massive explosion, which was caused by airborne particles of sawdust in the storage tower, said company officials. The blast occurred just before the third shift went home. The plant, formerly owned by MDF Technology, will be shut down for cleanup and repairs for at least a week.

“It sounded like you put five or so sticks of dynamite together and set them off,” said Everett Rhinebeck Jr., who heard the blast from across town while on his way to work the first shift at 6:30 a.m.

His father, Everett Rhinebeck Sr., a mechanic, was outside at the time of the explosion and was able to see and feel the blast.

“It felt like somebody dropped a rock next to your feet,” said Rhinebeck. He said it blew a collecting box mounted atop the tower “up in the air.”

“Good heavens, do you mean that the beetles are attacking? Now? In February? Land ‘O Goshen, I’ve never heard of beetles raising a ruckus in February.”

“No, no granny, you’ve got it all wrong. These are The Beatles. They sing and say funny things.”

“You mean those people I saw on the television Sunday night? They’re beetles?”

“No, they’re singers from England. They have a certain beat to their music and from this they got their name — The Beatles.”

“All Oneonta is talking about them,” chimes in the 13-year-old girl. “Every class I was in today, people were talking about The Beatles. Most teachers don’t like them very well — a few thought they were okay.”

Old heads look back down the years and see other crazes. They remember when girls fainted when dead away as Frank Sinatra sang his wobbly high notes; they recall a clean-cut youngster named Pat Boone who drove the kids wild for a spell.
