SIDNEY — The bad news for the village of Sidney recently was that Amphenol Corp. will be laying off 75 workers Feb. 17. The good news for the village however is that those displaced workers may have somewhere to go.

Down on O’Neil Road, Keith Clark Inc. plans to add at least 25 workers to its current staff of 875. On nearby Winkler Road, the Sidney Industrial Park should be adding at least two businesses — the John P. Huff Ice Cream Co. of Ninevah, which is owned by a Gilbertsville native, and T&G Custom Cabinetry of West Main Street in Sidney.

Keith Wrigley, president of Sidney’s Industrial Development Agency, has recently been traveling to Europe, trying to entice businesses to buy into the industrial park.

Wrigley said 1988 was a banner year for Sidney business. Keith Clark Inc., manufacturer of calendars and other date products, bought up the At-A-Glance product line and moved those operations from Pittsfield, Mass., to Keith Clark headquarters in Sidney, creating over 100 jobs. The industrial park continued to grow, and even the almost-forgotten downtown area saw growth, with the opening of Pete Basile’s Sidney Mall on Cartwright Avenue and a Hardee’s Restaurant on Union Street.

A review of the specifications for the reconstruction and widening of West Street will be the first item on the agenda when the city obtains the services of an engineering firm, Alderman Cecil Matthews said Wednesday night.

Mr. Matthews made the statement during a joint meeting of the Common Council, Capital Budget and Planning Commission and Public Service Board to determine what projects the city might wish to accomplish with federal aid during the coming year.

Mayor Albert S. Nader said he favored retaining the services of Stearns and Wheler of Cazenovia for the city’s engineering work.

Several projects were mentioned as possibilities for capital improvement under federal aid.

Among them were expanded water service to Hartwick College, auxiliary pumping facilities at the millrace, widening of East Street, improvement of Grove and River Streets.
