NORWICH — Chenango County will pay a geologist and a wildlife biologist $16,000 for expert opinions on why Chenango County should not be home to a statewide radioactive waste facility.

The county has less than a month to put together a document contesting the state’s siting criteria and officials said Friday they want to have professional names attached to that report, which is due to the state March 27.

Five towns in northern Chenango County and the town of Coventry are among 10 possible sites for the waste facility.

The county Solid Waste Committee Friday approved spending $15,000 to hire James Young of Terran Research in Cazenovia and $1,000 to hire W. Frederick Stevens, a wildlife biologist in Guilford. Both hirings are subject to approval from the full Board of Supervisors March 20.

The Common Council Tuesday night voted to purchase the property at 2-6 Chestnut St. (at the corner of Market Street) from T.P. Hughson for $15,000. The property is intended for eventual use in expanding the city’s parking facilities.

Alderman James Lettis, chairman of the parking committee, told the council that Mr. Hughson had agreed to sell the property for $15,000. He said the property is currently assessed for $10,500, which at the city’s equalization rate of 45, would place full value in excess of $23,000.

Mr. Lettis said the property would eventually be used for parking and said he is negotiating for the purchase of two adjacent parcels of property — the New York State Electric and Gas land and that owned by the Angellotti Brothers.

Put to a vote, the measure passed by a vote of four to two with Aldermen Signorino and Feeney opposing the purchase.

The property includes the Wilson Hotel and Townsend Printing.
