WALTON — Construction on a 37-unit apartment complex in the village of Walton is expected to begin in April, said the developer at a village board meeting Monday night.

Robert L. Marshall of Syracuse said Westbrook Apartments will be built on about three acres of property on St. John Street Extension. The complex will have three buildings including a community area and laundry room. The other buildings will house 12 one-bedroom apartments for senior citizens, 24 two-bedroom apartments and one apartment for a manager.

Marshall asked trustees to approve applying for a state grant of at least $110,000 to assist in construction of water and sewer lines on village-owned property. Trustees voted unanimously to apply for the Infrastructure Development Demonstration Program grant.

The state Housing Finance Agency established the grant in July because of the housing shortage. The grant is to provide communities with money that they may not have in their budget to cover projects on municipal property, Marshall said.
