Catskill Airways employee layoffs and cuts in the number of flights at the Oneonta airport will be discussed at a city Airport Committee meeting tonight.
“Basically it will be an opportunity to throw around some ideas to work towards some sort of policy directions the city might take” in relation to Catskill Airways, said 7th Ward Alderman Winifred Wandersee. Wandersee is the committee’s Common Council liaison.
Mayor David W. Brenner said he is hoping Catskill officials will take the opportunity to update the city of the airline’s status.
The airline announced last week that 11 employees had been laid off and all but three of its 14 daily flights from Oneonta had been canceled.
Committee member John S. Nader said the meeting still will go on even if Catskill representatives do not attend. He said he wants to find out how other committee members feel about Catskill’s action. If the committee comes to a consensus on what the city should do, it will pass the recommendation on to the Common Council, he said.
The Common Council is expected to discuss the airport problems and listen to Catskill officials at its own meeting Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Though Brenner expressed displeasure last week with Catskill’s lack of communication with the city, he said the city is committed to helping the airline. Like Nader, he said he is more concerned with airline service than with the company’s payment of $28,400 in back taxes.
