Nick Lambros was a bit taken aback when he kept getting congratulated at Hartwick College’s commencement exercises Sunday.
“People kept hugging and kissing me and I didn’t know what was going on,” said the men’s basketball coach at Hartwick for the past 11 years. “I didn’t have a clue.”
What was going on was yet another accolade for Lambros and the Warriors, who reached the NCAA Division III Final Four in March. Lambros has been named national Division III Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Earlier in the year Lambros was named East Region Coach of the Year by the same panel.
Although Lambros is appreciative of the national honor, he doesn’t quite understand why he was named the top coach in the nation.
“I knew I would be nominated since I won the East award, but I really thought the Ohio Wesleyan coach (Gene Mehaffey) would get it since he won it all,” he said. “We had a nice year and you should go all the way to get an honor like this, but I guess that’s not always true.”
Lambros won his 200th game as Hartwick coach on Jan. 28 against SUNY-Stony Brook and is 207-73 in his 11 seasons at the school, winning 74 percent of his games. This year’s team was his sixth to be invited to the NCAA Tournament and in 1979 he was named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year.
