DELHI — Fred Barkalow keeps himself in shape playing basketball in the Oneonta City Recreation league. It wasn’t enough to help him keep up with a team of New York Giants Friday night in a benefit basketball game at Delaware Academy.
Barkalow and his Delhi all-star teammates — consisting of such household names as Don Trelease, Duane Gardner, Tim Kinch, Martin Hood, Jerry Shultis and Gary Cole — lost by 23 points to a New York Giants team of Zeke Mowatt, Rob Jones, William Roberts, Tom Flynn, Herb Welch, Perry Williams and George Adams.
The charity game drew approximately 600 people and the Giants players will be around tomorrow for a charity Clam Bake at the Burton F. Clark Office Grounds.
“Yeah, I play rec basketball. This is against superior athletes and I think it shows,” Barkalow said. “They can do anything they want with us and I think this shows just what it takes to be a professional athlete.”
For the Giants, many of whom are between mini-camp and training camp, the benefit is a chance to donate their time to some worthy charities and keep in shape.
Lineman Roberts was one of them.
“I was asked to come and I don’t mind donating my time for this type of thing,” said Roberts, who averages about three benefits a week during the off-season.
The charities that will benefit from the proceeds are the Delaware County Stocking Fund, O’Connor Hospital Respiratory Fund and the United Way through the National Football League.
