Oneonta High School graduate Steve Downey came off the bench to score eight points in Siena College’s 80-78 upset over Stanford in the first round of the NCAA East Regional tournament Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.

Downey, a 6-foot-11-inch sophomore who was sidelined much of the season by mononucleosis, played about 15 minutes. He made three of four shots from the field and two of three free throws before fouling out.

Downey led Oneonta High School to the Section Four, Class B championship in 1986-87, his senior year, and was named Daily Star Player of the Year that same season.

His former coach at OHS, Bob Zeh, watched Thursday’s game on television.

“I wouldn’t have missed it,” said Zeh, who sent Downey a congratulatory telegram Thursday night.
