NORWICH — Chenango County supervisors Monday tabled a proposed law banning radioactive waste because it would make operation of the county’s largest employer illegal.
Without intending to, the law would prohibit the small amount of radioactive waste generated by Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals Inc. Supervisors tabled the law and will add an amendment exempting Norwich Eaton, before voting on it next month.
The county’s target in making the law is a proposed state low-level radioactive waste dump. Two sites in Chenango County are among 10 the state is considering for the dump.

Shareholders in the Delaware and Hudson Company and its subsidiaries benefitted from reduced operating costs in 1963 to see their per-share earnings from D&H stock rise 19 cents over 1962 to $1.90 per share.
According to the annual report, D&H stock paid a $11.25 per share dividend, the same as was returned to stockholders in 1962.
This was achieved, the company report discloses, despite revenues that decreased slightly during the year. Lowered operating costs and an increase in income from equipment rentals made the difference.
In addition, the report revealed, the D&H has placed orders for 150 new 50-foot box cars of 70-ton capacity with wide doors, cushion-under frames and roller bearings.
The new equipment, the report says, is due for delivery in the second quarter of the year and will cost the railroad about $4.2 million. It will be purchased under conditional sales agreements providing for a 20 percent down payment and the remainder to be paid over 10 years.Step Back in Time features news items from The Daily Star 25 and 50 years ago.
