April 3, 1963

JEFFERSON — Two hundred people attended Jefferson Central School’s first Science Fair held in the gym and grade rooms Saturday. Ninety-five projects from the grade and high schools were entered.

First prize in the senior high school division was won by Barry Graham with his demonstration on the “Polarization of Light.” A close second was won by Edwin Rivenburgh and Diane Schmidt with their demonstration of “Acoustics.”

In the junior high division, first prize was taken by Martha Rivenburgh, Melodie Harmon and Nancy Pindar. Their exhibit was “The Hatching Age of Eggs.” Second place was won by Andrew Nelson and Edwin Lawrence with their “Electricity” project.

First place winners in the grades were Grade 6, “The Telephone,” by John Stiber and Walter Payne; Grade 5, “Volcanoes,” by Debra Hall, Robert Stiber and Ronald Nichols; Grade 4, “Microscope,” by Marie Harders; Grade 3, “Ants,” by Gail Hall. In the second grade Susan Nelson won first prize with her “Magnet” demonstration. Darlene Hamm was first in the first grade with her display of “Woods.”

Judges were Dr. Gerry Rivers, Cornell University, Phillip Chien, South Kortright Central School, and Arthur Hartman, Stamford Central School.
