Residents living in dormitories at the State University College at Oneonta are planning Operation Cleanup of downtown Oneonta Saturday, according to Denise DeLuca, a member of the college President’s Council.

DeLuca said about 100 students are expected to show up at the city bus station at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and work for an hour to pick up the mess made by students Friday night.

She said Todd J. Zimmer, president of McDuff Hall, came up with the idea a few weeks ago.

“This is a community service performed by the students of SUCO in an attempt to show ourselves as responsible and caring members of the community,” Zimmer said. Students, faculty, city residents and downtown merchants should benefit from the effort, Zimmer added.

Oneonta school teachers will get a “perspective on business” in the city area Oct. 18 when they are guests of the Chamber of Commerce at Business Education Day.

Key to the session will be personal visits by the faculty members to manufacturing, service and retail firms throughout the city in a two-hour tour.

Key speaker of the day will be James W. Moore, of the Bureau of Guidance of the New York State Education Department. Mr. Moore will address the group on “Schools and Business Must Become Partners.”

The program starts at 9 a.m. at the high school auditorium where the assembled teachers will be welcomed by Superintendent Dr. Harold V. Hager and will hear a message from Chamber President Clifford J. Harrer.

This will be followed by the showing of a movie from the National Chamber of Commerce entitled, “It’s Everybody’s Business.”

At 9:35 a.m. the faculty members will break up into small groups and will be taken to the headquarters of the various host firms where they will be welcomed by the chief executive of the business.

Oneonta area firms cooperating in the project are the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation; Delaware and Hudson Railroad; Astrocom Electronics; New York Telephone Company; Oneonta Daily Star; and Seeley Ceramic Service; Fox Hospital; Medical Coaches, Inc; Oneonta Dress Mfg. Co.; Sheffield Chemical Company; Metropolitan Insurance; Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospital; Bresee’s Oneonta Department Store; The Building and Loan Association, and the Citizens National Bank and Trust Company.
