STAMFORD — With its last 20 hospital beds to be phased out at year’s end, Community Hospital in Stamford plans to add 80 more skilled nursing facility beds at an estimated cost of $5 million to take up financial slack.

The plan also calls for the hospital to continue emergency services, provided through a diagnostic and treatment center. A chief concern of local residents through two-and-a-half years of financial and bureaucratic struggle at Community has been maintaining emergency care.

J. Thomas Wickham, Community board chairman, said the move to increase the 40 existing skilled nursing beds to 120 will create a level of care that will be financially viable.

However, getting all 80 beds will depend on what expansion plans other area hospitals have. Wickham said it is a competitive situation that will not be known until the certificates of need are filed with the state Health Department.

Tramp, tramp, tramp the bums are marching — straight to Unadilla’s “Hobo Hilton Hotel,” scene this weekend of the annual hobo convention.

Hoboes from just about every country will attend the convention on the Unadilla Central School stage in “Hoboes Internationale.”

“Hoboes Internationale,” a mulligan stew concocted by using a variety of entertaining ingredients, will be presented this Friday and Saturday.

Curtain time for the Unadilla Rotary Club presentation will be 8:15 p.m.

Unadilla residents — some members of the Rotary Club and others not — will cast the two-act package of music, jokes, a dash of dancing and politics.

The show, presented for the benefit of the Rotary Club’s youth activity fund, was patched together by club members, according to the show’s director, Otis Atkins of Sidney.
