The West Oneonta emergency squad, troubled by a lack of volunteers in recent years, won’t be providing ambulance service after Tuesday, April 18.

In a move that took the emergency squad’s chief by surprise, the West Oneonta Board of Fire Commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday to shut down the service. It is the first emergency squad to go out of business in Otsego County, according to Robert Barnes, county emergency services coordinator.

Residents may continue to call an ambulance using the squad’s number, but the county will tone out either the Oneonta city fire department or ambulance squads in Laurens or Otego, said John Reed, chairman of the board of fire commissioners.

“The Emergency Control Center will transfer them. The town was always served by Oneonta before we had this service,” Reed said.

COOPERSTOWN — Temporary classroom space will be provided next year to adequately care for the increasing enrollment in the Junior-Senior Cooperstown High School.

The Board of Education of the school officially approved a proposal of leasing two portable classroom units, house trailers converted to meet State Education Department specifications for school use.

The mobile classrooms will provide space for the business and homemaking departments, according to Nicholas J. Sterling, Supervising Principal.

The trailers will be placed between the auditorium and the north and south wings in the rear of the present Junior-Senior High School building on Chestnut Street.

Mr. Sterling pointed out that the student population in the Junior-Senior High School continues to grow. Last June the school graduated a class of 68 seniors. Next June, the class will number about 92, and in June 1965, the graduating class will exceed the 100 mark.
