ONEONTA — Mrs. Sande LaMonica was honored recently by the Del-Otsego Sertoma Club as the recipient of the 1987 Service to Mankind award for her service to cancer patients and their families in Otsego County.

Mrs. LaMonica was the executive director of the Otsego County unit of the American Cancer Society from June 1983 to October 1987.

“She served with a special commitment that is being recognized by this award,” said William Benedict, program chairman of the Sertoma Club.

Mrs. LaMonica, a native of Sidney, graduated from Alfred State University College in 1971 and started her professional career by working in several physicians’ offices in Oneonta. She joined the Fox Hospital staff and became coordinator of the Cancer Control Program as tumor registrar. She was also publicity chairman for the New York State Tumor Register Association.

When she became executive director of the Otsego County Unit of the American Cancer Society, she built all the activities of the Society to a level in which it received nine outstanding achievement awards in the areas of public education, public information, youth activities, the Turnaround Award for Crusade (fund-raising), professional education and for four years in a row the award for the best Great American Smokeout.

“Without the support of my family and the volunteers and patients, I would have not worked the extra hours and given the extra effort to my job. I was honored just to have been nominated for the Service to Mankind award,” Mrs. LaMonica said.

Mrs. LaMonica is also involved in Cub Scout activities with her sons, Douglas, 9, and David, 7. She is president of a local bowling league and secretary for the Ma Bell Bowling League. She is a member of the Oneonta Business Women and the Oneonta Professional Women’s Network.
