Feb. 8, 1988

ONEONTA — Lailye Weidman, 8, received the second prize in the November “Cricket League” international art competition sponsored by “Cricket” magazine. Entrants were asked to draw a peddler. Lailye drew a jewelry salesman with a magic carpet. The drawing appears in the February issue of the magazine.

Lailye is the daughter of Chris and Melissa Weidman, 3 Sand St., Oneonta. She is in the third grade at Valleyview Elementary School. Her father is also an artist. Lailye said she likes to draw people and horses. She also likes to swim and takes ballet lessons. Her prize was a book, “The Black Horse.”

Lailye’s drawing was chosen from more than 700 to 800 entries which the magazine receives for its monthly writing and drawing competitions.

50 years ago

Feb. 8, 1963

SPRINGFIELD — “The Honor Society in the Space Age,” was the theme of the National Honor Society Assembly held at Springfield Central School.

Members explained the traits looked for in candidates and observed how important these characteristics had been in the astronauts, giving some details of the lives of John Glenn, Walter Schirra, Virgil Grissom and Alan Shepard.

Richard W. Ford, supervising principal, announced that William Gray has been declared eligible for an Honor Society Scholarship, and Laraine Manley was named the winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award at Springfield High School.

Six new members were initiated into the organization including Patricia Callahan, Helen Cook, Mary Bridger, Mary Murphy, Barbara Van Alstine and Ruth Young.
