There are two things Americans want delivered on time, regardless of rain, snow and gloom of night — U.S. Mail and hot pizza.

Friday’s snowstorm warning had management at Domino’s in Oneonta considering calling in a couple of extra delivery workers, said James Wheeler, manager trainee.

“Sometimes when the cops have closed down the roads, advising against any travelers being out, we still send out,” said Wheeler.

That’s because Domino’s guarantees delivery in half an hour, or the pizza is free, said Wheeler. Though snow sometimes makes that a tough timetable to keep, there still aren’t too many “freebees” distributed.

Locally, Oneonta is Pizza City, with a dozen pizzerias advertising in the Yellow Pages. Most deliver.

Beyond the college towns, there is a near-void on delivering American’s Number One fast food. Village Pizza in Stamford delivers. Sidney has about 6,000 people and four pizzerias, but no deliveries. The same is true in Cooperstown.

Ironically, the worse the weather, the more the demand for doorbell pizza.

“When it starts to snow, the phones just start ringing,” said Wheeler at Domino’s. About 200 pies are made on a regular night and up to 300 on a lousy night.

“That’s the way this business goes,” said Alfredo Liardo, who has operated the family-owned Pizza Shack in Cobleskill for about six years. “People want to stay in and call out.”

CHERRY VALLEY — “The town is enthusiastic, the ball is rolling, and where it stops nobody knows,” William E. Day, president of the new Executive Committee in charge of the fund raising campaign for the medical clinic in Cherry Valley, reported happily.
