WALTON — Village trustees in Walton agreed Monday night to keep the five-man police force and allocated in the proposed budget about the same amount the police chief had requested.

A memo submitted to the board from the village Police Committee stated the force should be kept as is and the quality of the protection improved.

The memo was in response to a proposal from Mayor Raymond Baldi two weeks ago to either eliminate the department, reduce it from five to three officers or keep it as it is.

Police Chief Mel Woodin requested approximately $136,331 and received $142,554, not including $8,000 that has been carried in escrow the past two years for another car. The proposed police department budget without employee benefits is $150,554.

The entire tentative budget is $1,044,986, down less than one percent from this year’s $1,053,129.

UNADILLA — Dr. Donald McKown, supervisor of the Town of Sidney, disclosed Wednesday night that the East Sidney Dam recreational land area will be completed in time for use this summer.

Dr. McKown said that within two weeks the U.S. Corps of Engineers will purchase the necessary land for the recreation area.

Planned is a picnic area on the lake front. Water will be impounded behind the dam from mid-May to mid-September, extending eastward for two and a half miles at a depth of 25 feet.

The Engineers expect to construct stone and concrete picnic benches and boat docks, to make the lake area available for boating and swimming, Dr. McKown said.

The disclosure was made at a meeting of 35 to 40 persons in Unadilla Community House, called to hear a variety of talks on projects in the villages of Sidney, Unadilla and Bainbridge.
