Political activist Abbie Hoffman will speak on “Student Activism: 1960s to 1980s” in the Hunt College Ballroom at the State University College at Oneonta at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22.

Hoffman worked in the civil rights movement organizing voter registration drives in the South during the early 1960s. He protested against the Vietnam War starting in 1964, and his demonstration outside the Democratic National Convention in 1968 brought him national attention.

As a defendant in the Chicago Seven conspiracy trial, Hoffman shocked the nation by his guerilla theater tactics in the courtroom. In 1973, he went underground but still managed to stay politically active.

Hoffman now works with several environmental groups throughout the Great Lakes and the Northeast, and he recently returned from a trip to Nicaragua.

The SUCO College Union Activities Council is sponsoring Hoffman’s lecture.
