COOPERSTOWN — A cave-man overnight was the feature of the last hike by Cooperstown Troop 54, held in the woods east of Pathfinder Lodge, following a five-mile hike to the campsite.

Rules were no matches, no tents, no cooking equipment or silverware, other than fashioned with knife and hatchet, no canned or other prepared food, and no flashlights.

In the manner of the cave man, a fire was built with flint and steel and other fires kindled from the first. Cooking methods included baking or broiling on live coals, an oven built of hot stones, oatmeal cooked in a grapefruit skin bowl, roasting on a spit between two forked sticks or on one stick, weighted with a stone on the other end, and cooling in bowls of cocoa-nut shells which also doubled for lanterns.

Several lean-to shelters were erected. Joseph Bozosi and Joseph Brayden drew praise for their enclosed lean-to hut of materials found on the site.

Others participating in this pre-historic expedition included Stephen Ballard, David Chase, James Chase, Alton G. Dunn, 3rd, Bruce Dunn, Kevin Grady, Gary Jennings, Darrell Osterhoudt, James Reynolds and Stephen Windsor.
