Thirty years ago, Oneonta had only one bakery. Now though the population has remained stable, there are more than a half-dozen bakeries competing for the taste buds of local residents.

“It’s more people eating a smaller piece of pie,” said Les Burgess, owner of The Country Baker on Main Street for the past three years. He said that he thinks the increased competition will take a tool on bakers.

“Oneonta doesn’t need another restaurant, or another pizzeria, nor another bakery, not in my theory.”

Dan-Dee Donuts of America, on Main Street, has been in Oneonta for almost three decades, coming here when Decker’s (now The Country Baker) was the only other bakery, said Bruce Bachanas, manager. Then even grocery stores stocked only pre-packaged baked goods, he said.

Dailey’s Bakery and Caffeehaus on Chestnut Street opened 11 years ago. Puffs ‘n Stuff, which moved last year from Southside Mall to 171 Main St., has been around for four years. Two newcomers, both about a year and a half old, are Drury Lane Bakery and Café at Clinton Plaza, and Neptune Diner and Restaurant across from the Southside Mall.

Mike Green, owner of Puffs ‘n Stuff, doesn’t think the baked goods market is as crowded as it looks.

“Each bakery has found a separate niche so there is not that much competition,” he said. “The community is probably better for it because no one bakery could serve with as high quality and diversity.”
