Hartwick College coach Nick Lambros has been selected National Association of Basketball Coaches East Region Coach of the Year for leading the Warriors to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.

Lambros, who has 206 career victories at Hartwick, guided Hartwick to victories over Staten Island and Buffalo State last weekend. Saturday, 22-4 Hartwick hosts Trenton State in the quarterfinals.

Fellow coaches say Lambros deserves the honor.

“Last year, Hartwick won 13 or 14 games and he’s got the same people he had then,” said Oneonta State coach Don Flewelling.

Flewelling said one of Lambros’ top assets is his ability to run an effective offense against any defense an opponent plays. So far this season, Hartwick has scored 1,985 points, an average of 81 per game.

Lambos said the honor came as “a shock” to him.

“It’s nice because the coaches vote on it,” said Lambros. “I think it says a lot for our coaching staff. It’s not a one-man show. It takes a lot of work, a lot of breaks and good concentration for five months.”
