Tuesday’s record-tying high of 92 degrees is expected to put on a repeat performance today, according to a local weather observer.

“We’re going to have another scorcher,” said David K. Mattice, a National Weather Service observer at Goodyear Lake near Oneonta. “This could be the hottest spell of the summer.”

The searing heat comes on the heels of record cold set last Friday. By Thursday the temperature is expected to recede to a more seasonable high of 82.

While skies have been sunny, lack of rainfall may be a growing concern for farmers, Mattice said. Thursday may bring some thundershowers, but the 30-day outlook is for continued lack of rain.

Tuesday afternoon’s high temperature of 92 degrees tied a record high set June 14, 1956. Monday’s temperature was 88 degrees, just 3 degrees below the record high of 91 degrees in 1949.

What the area needs most is rain because it is below normal so far this year, and the dryness is becoming critical, said Mattice.

“June has been very dry, as has been the year,” Mattice said. In June rainfall has totaled .29 inches so far, he said, compared to the average of 1.81 for the first 14 days of the month, and 3.62 inches for all of June.

Volunteer workers set up 56 poles at the David Martin Memorial site at the Otsego County fairgrounds Thursday night, in preparation for the daylong “workbee” today, to erect the basic structure. In a photo, they happened to resemble the famous Iwo Jima flag-raising photo. The committee is in hopes that some 100 volunteers will turn out at the fairgrounds in Morris.
