Eighth Ward Alderman Asa C. Allison Jr. suggested Tuesday that the Common Council consider moving the 181-year-old Swart Wilcox house to Neahwa Park and sell the 10 acres where it is now for development.

Allison said the house could be used as offices for the city parks and recreation department in the new location and the city could collect taxes on the land if it is sold and developed.

Allison said from a financial point of view, the city could increase its tax base by selling the large parcel of land to a developer. He indicated the money is needed by estimating a loss of $1.5 million from the telephone company over the last four years, a loss of $380,000 from NYSEG and an amount from the post office in tax dollars.

The land is worth $150,000 to $200,000 on the market, Allison said.

Third Ward Alderman John J. Carney suggested that they might be able to compromise on that proposal by selling only a portion of the 10 acres.

Two other proposals for the property had been heard earlier this month. One proposal called for the conversion of the building into an educational/ recreational center for students of the nearby Riverside School. Otsego-Northern Catskill BOCES has proposed making the house usable for its alternative education program.

Saturday, June 23, a public dedication service will be conducted at the Oneonta Assembly of God Church.

In mid-September of last year the church refinanced its church mortgage in order to secure funds to build a parsonage and church annex which includes Sunday School rooms and a church fellowship hall.

Men of the church volunteered their services and the building was built ready for occupancy the end of February of this year. Considerable time was spent by most of the men of the church in building of it in order to save contractors fees and meet a limited budget.
