COOPERSTOWN — Organizers continued preparations for today’s opening of Summer Festival 1989 in Cooperstown while storm clouds loomed overhead threatening to dampen the big event.

Roughly 20,000 spectators were expected in Cooperstown today to watch the National Baseball Hall of Fame celebrate its 50th birthday with a morning parade expected to last an hour, afternoon baseball and fireworks after dark.

For the Cooperstown area today, there was 40 percent chance of rain this morning, with breaks in the cloud cover expected by late morning. Heavy rain was forecast for the region southeast of here, in the eastern Catskills, and there were flood watches in that area, according to Cooperstown Mayor Harold Hollis, who is also an official observer for the National Weather Service.

Hollis said people can only keep their fingers crossed and hope the weather is at least decent for the parade, which is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m.

BAINBRIDGE — A state proposed merger of the Bainbridge-Guilford and Afton school districts was thumbed down Monday night by Principal Edward Andrews.

Mr. Andrews told a gathering of about 200 persons at an open meeting at the Juliand Street School that the state proposed merger “…is not recommended nor would the people want it.”

The proposed merger was briefly discussed by Mr. Andrews at the beginning of a meeting which was called by the Board of Education and Parent-Teachers Organization to discuss the proposed school budget.

In his report on the merger, Mr. Andrews said a survey of the Bainbridge-Guilford and Afton districts revealed “That it is not recommended nor would the people want it.”
