LAURENS — Dr. Madeleine F. Coutant, Laurens Central School teacher for less than two years, Wednesday received the Valley Forge Classroom Teachers Medal in ceremonies during an all-school assembly.

Mrs. Coutant, who teaches English and French in the high school, was one of only 19 in New York State to receive the medal from the Freedoms Foundation.

The citation with the medal reads in part that it is for “Exceptional classroom work in behalf of responsible, patriotic citizenship and the American Way of Life. You are singled out by the Freedom’s Foundation’s ... Awards Jury as an important professional contribution to maintaining our American Constitutional Republic.

“Freedoms Foundation is delighted to bestow this proper recognition ... for your outstanding service beyond the call of duty in helping our young people to a better understanding and knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in this land of God and Freedom.”

Mrs. Coutant was nominated for the award by the students in her class in the 1962-63 school year. After she became eligible, she had to write a report on some aspect of the American Way of Life which she taught in her classes.

Mrs. Coutant is a veteran teacher with 35 years experience, including 15 years in Oneonta High School, five years as an assistant professor of chemistry at Hartwick College and two years at Laurens. She is also the founder of the Oneonta Science Congress, discontinued last year.
