GILBERTSVILLE — If Gilbertsville residents feel more and more isolated these days, they have good reason — four bridges that provide access to the village of Gilbertsville have been closed, nearly making an island of the community. The people who relied on those bridges want to do something about it.

“When we’re going to a fire or to save a person’s life, time counts and every extra minute is a problem,” said Gilbertsville Fire Chief James Pochy. He said taking detours around the closed bridges on crooked, windy and narrow roads is adding unwanted minutes to emergency calls.

“This community is becoming an island with little access in and out on roads in very poor conditions,” said Suzanne Armstrong, who is organizing an informational meeting for 8 p.m. tonight at the Major’s Inn on Main Street in Gilbertsville.

Gilbertsville residents say they cannot understand why the three county bridges and one town bridge are all closed at the same time, and they worry that the effects of the closings will snowball, as traffic is detoured onto smaller secondary bridges which may be unable to take the added punishment

BAINBRIDGE — This Chenango County community settled on the north bank of the Susquehanna River will celebrate its 175th anniversary on the Fourth of July weekend.

Village organizations united pan the “Bainbridge Homecoming Weekend,” on July 3, 4 and 5.

Plans, which have been developed in past Village Board meetings and other organizational meetings, call for an event-packed celebration.

The days of the three-cornered hats, long-stemmed clay pipes and tales of the Revolution, will set people back to 1789 when the celebration officially opens 5 p.m. Friday with a country style supper at the Grange Hall.

An alumni dinner will be held at 6 p.m. at the Elks Club in Sidney. A few of the older generation dating, not-too-far-back to 1901, are expected to attend.
