NORWICH — About 30 Mount Upton students went into surgery Friday at Chenango Memorial Hospital. No incisions were made; the students were merely there to tour the operating room.

For the sixth and seventh grade Mount Upton students, the tour was designed to go along with their health curriculum, make them aware of health careers and “might alleviate some of their fears if they ever have to come to the hospital,” said Fred Kirsch, assistant superintendent.

Faced with a shortage of nurses and other medical professionals, hospital staff also hoped to sell some of the students on the idea of going into the field. “We hope to inspire them all to go off and become nurses and physicians,” as well as make the students less fearful of hospitals, said Patrician Bevan, hospital spokesman.
