The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will spend $93,000 for a flood control project on the Susquehanna River near Oneonta.

Congressman Samuel S. Stratton (D-Schenectady) said Tuesday he was assured by the Chief of the Engineers that a clearing and snagging operation would be carried out near Oneonta.

Cost of the project, according to Mr. Stratton, is $93,000. When the project will get underway is difficult to determine at this time.

The city will have to meet certain stipulations before the project can get underway, the congressman reported. The second factor hinges on when the funds will be made available to the Army Engineers.

Mr. Stratton said the city must provide easements and rights of way to suitable areas for disposal of the spoiled material. The city must bear the brunt of this cost.

Oneonta also must protect the United States from damages due to construction, relocate all of the utilities and maintain the project after its completion, he stated.

Mr. Stratton says he has been informed that the project will “proceed as rapidly as possible when the city’s assurances have been approved and an allotment of funds has been received by the Army engineers for construction purposes.”
