Anthony LeoGrande, who died of a heart attack in 1983 while a member of the Oneonta Fire Department, was one of 237 firefighters remembered Saturday at a dedication of the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

“It was something that was long overdue,” said Otsego County Fire Coordinator Robert Barnes. “The memorial commemorates firefighters who have given their lives for the citizens throughout this state.”

The dedication, with over 400 people in attendance, unveiled a mini-chapel and statue located at the Frederick L. Warder Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, Schuyler County.

The 52-inch wood-carved statue is a firefighter with a child by his side and a dog at his feet, said William Randolph, Schuyler County fire coordinator and an organizer of the event.

Once in a while, you still hear the phrase “Give it back to the Indians.” But local sports enthusiasts seem to be pulling a major switch on the old saw.

Up at Hartwick College, Dave Haase is busy teaching some eager underclassmen the fundamentals of an old Indian game, called “baggataway.” Nowadays, of course, the game is better known as lacrosse. But chances are, when the Warriors open their first lacrosse season May 2 against St. Lawrence, the rough-and-tumble hard-checking action won’t have changed much from the days when the Iroquois Nation made it the moral equivalent of tribal combat.

Meanwhile, Oneonta State isn’t lagging behind in resurrecting old Indian sports. It hasn’t been too widely noticed, but the SUCO Outing Club has picked up quite a bit of national prestige with its annual Canoe and Kayak Slalom races.

Though the Outing Club functions in relative obscurity, there’ll be national ranking at stake when the group presents its second annual slalom races Saturday and Sunday at the East Sidney dam. The race has been designated one of five qualifying runs for the national white-water championships, which will be held May 17 in Vermont.
