NORWICH — Opponents of the state’s plan to put a low-level radioactive waste dump in one of 10 rural counties accuse Gov. Mario Cuomo of virtually ignoring the issue. They hope to catch his attention Saturday by depositing 10 caskets on the lawn of the Governor’s mansion in Albany.

Members of Don’t Waste New York, a statewide coalition of residents opposed to having the dump in their counties, will march in the state capital this weekend to protest the selection of 10 sites, including two in Chenango County, as possible locations for the radioactive waste dump.

Fred Bateman, the coordinator for waste dump opposition in Chenango County, said about 500 people from across the state are expected to show up for the march Saturday, including dozens of Chenango County residents who will go out by bus. The march is perhaps the most significant statement against the dump since thousands showed up for the state informational meetings on the sites over the winter, and will be the first public display of statewide opposition.

“Of course we would have liked 10,000 if we could have gotten them,” Bateman said, “But I think more important than numbers is the symbolism of the unity of the whole state.”

WALTON — The Merchants Committee of the Walton Chamber of Commerce with Howard R. Mealus, chairman, met Monday night and voted that Walton stores will remain open Friday nights instead of changing to Thursday evenings.

There were 29 members on hand for the Chamber session and of these only four voted for the change to the Thursday nights openings.

Mr. Mealus was asked to give a reason why Walton merchants should change to Thursday night shopping.

He said, “It would be a step in the right direction and there are several reasons: One being that merchants could support athletic and social events if they could attend school functions normally held on Friday night.

He also said it was wise to be open when competition is open from surrounding communities. However, he said, there is the opposite side, the bank is open on Friday night.
