OTEGO — Evidence of living quarters dating back to the Revolutionary War was a highlight among the historic and prehistoric relics found in a yard in Otego, according to Bill Bouchard, who directed the project to unearth the artifacts.

“The more we looked, the more there was,” said Bouchard of Hartgen Archaeological Associates of Troy. He will discuss findings during a program in the Grange Building on Main Street in Otego at 7 p.m. today.

The state Power Authority leased a 25-acre site from the town of Otego to store equipment for the Marcy South power line project, which was completed last year. The field also was the site of a graveyard, and bones of three unidentified people were buried last October where they accidentally been unearthed in 1986.

The property was popular among a wide group of prehistoric people from 2000 B.C. until the end of the Revolutionary War, including archaic and woodlands peoples and early European settlers, said Bouchard. Hundreds of artifacts were found during the project, and now they are in storage at Hartgen Archaeological Associates, said Bill Slade of the Power Authority. The Power Authority is responsible for finding a “suitable repository” for the artifacts.

Oneonta Junior High School Principal Miss Edna Tripp Tuesday briefly outlined how the JHS will operate next September when it moves into full day sessions and takes over use of the present Oneonta High School Building on Academy Street.

She spoke to about 50 members of the JHS Home-School Organization at the group’s last meeting of the year in the school auditorium.

Using an opaque projector, Miss Tripp showed the group exactly what facilities in the two schools will be used for, the schedule for their use by students, sample class schedules for seventh, eighth and ninth grade students. She also noted curriculum and room use changes. The whole program is centered around what Miss Tripp labeled a “closed noon hour program.” She explained, “Everyone will have to eat lunch in the school. They can buy a lunch, bring a lunch or bring part of a lunch and buy the rest.”

Floors of the two schools have been designated for certain subjects. The present JHS building will be known as the “South Building; the present OHS will be known as the North Building.”
