A group of 30 residents and students met on the banks of the Susquehanna River Saturday morning to remove garbage from the area.

“The turnout was more than I expected,” said Andrew Mason, president of the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society. “The day was overcast with the threat of rain, but we had plenty of people.”

The river clean-up was sponsored by the Audubon Society, the Pine Lake Environmental Club of Hartwick College and Protect Your Environment of the State University College at Oneonta.

The group worked on a three-mile stretch of the river and the surrounding banks. All the garbage collected, about 40 bags, was taken to the Oneonta transfer station, said Julianne Parzek, founder and current president of the Pine Lake Club.

SIDNEY — A two year dream of the dissolving Girls Scout Troop 43 will become a reality today.

For two years the troop of 15 Senior High School students planned a trip to the New York World’s Fair.

“Ever since they first started talking about the fair we (the troop) decided we’d like to go,” said Mrs. Frank Dilley, troop leader.

At 9 a.m. today the girls and chaperones will leave for New York City in four cars and fulfill their dream.

The troop, a part of the Broome County Girl Scout Council, will dissolve because all its members are scheduled to graduate in June.

“Half of the troop,” Mrs. Dilley said, “has been together about 10 years. Since they were Brownies.”
