When United Methodists sing, “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” they will not be uttering the words “dumb” and “lame” which have been deleted from the text in the new hymnal.

The new hymnal, slated to be delivered to local churches in the summer or fall, also changes other items from the old hymnal written in 1966, in deference to women, the disabled and black people, said Raymond Paradis, director of music ministry with the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

“They’ve excluded a lot of sexist tones. The first line of a Christmas carol, ‘Good Christian Men’ has been changed to ‘Good Christian Friends,’” he said.

In addition to the deletions and changes, the new United Methodist hymnal includes songs in Spanish and in Native American languages because significant numbers of Puerto Ricans and Native Americans have joined the church.

Weary visitors in Oneonta or weary Oneontans just wanting a place to sit down will soon find their answer in a new rest area at the corner of Ford Avenue and Main Street.

A number of local agencies cooperated to donate time, materials and financing to make the barren little lot alongside the Palace Theater into an area where benches are to be provided, small trees planted and flowers cultivated.

The lower portion of the area has been covered with crushed gravel; the upper half will be covered with a new loam and planted to grass, making an attractive “stop over” point on Main Street.

The project, a program of the Civic Action Committee of Oneonta’s Chamber of Commerce headed by Vernon Seeley, was planned for last year but was delayed because there were plans afoot to widen Ford Avenue.

Cooperating in the venture are the Chamber; L.P. Butts Inc., the Wilber National Bank, Decar Amusements, The Oneonta Garden Club, Oneonta Hi-Y Club; Oneonta High School Key Club, local 4-H Clubs and the city.
