About 50 people, including dignitaries, stood in a cool May wind late Wednesday afternoon for official groundbreaking ceremonies at the new YMCA site on Ford Avenue.

Only one of the four honored guests appeared at the ceremony — 91-year-old Fred J. Rider. He watched proceedings from his car beside a speaker platform.

Other honored guests included Mrs. Beatrice Blanding, Mrs. Margaret Brigham Bunn and Mrs. J.A. Dewar, who were represented in the ceremonies by Hon. Richard J. Bookhout, Felix Barnett and Hon. Sterling P. Harrington.

Oneonta High School Principal Charles A. Belden, outlined the needs and responsibilities of the current YMCA building on Broad Street when it was first built in 1900 and touched on reasons why the building is no longer meeting the needs of the ‘Y’ organization of today.

The Oneonta High School Band played two selections and the OHS Color Guard stood at strict attention, despite the blustery wind.

W. Clyde Wright, president of the Oneonta YMCA, pointed out the eventual locations of planned facilities to onlookers and reported that ‘Y’ officials are “in sight of matching the cost of the building with available funds.”

The 2,600 square foot building was first estimated to cost about $1,000,000, Mr. Wright said. The fund drive last year raised almost $600,000.

Completion date for the new building has been set for the spring of 1965.
