For the past two weeks, area Girl Scouts have taken a look at the dark side of the working world, and some are intrigued by what they’ve seen.

At 4:15 a.m. Saturday, and the previous Saturday, the girls were at the Post Office, watching the day’s first load of mail being sorted.

At 2:30 a.m., they were swimming at the Oneonta YMCA. At midnight, they saw the Daily Star presses begin to roll and got a preview of Saturday’s newspaper. Earlier, they were making pizza at Domino’s, talking to a disc jockey at WZOZ and touring the fire station and state police station.

At 6 that morning, they watched Hartwick College bakers making doughnuts. And they finished the nocturnal tour at the Holiday Inn with breakfast, 12 hours after they started.

It was all in a night’s work, a part of a career exploration program for the junior and senior high school girls, sponsored by the Girl Scout’s Indian Hills Council.

“We traveled around the city, visiting people who work at night or in the wee hours of the morning to get a feel for that lifestyle,” said Sue Jennings, field director for the council. The “Night Owl Express” was also intended to spark the girls’ interest in something new and odd.

Some of the jobs were held by women, which provided too role models for the girls, Jennings said.

A parish-wide fund drive will start tomorrow to finance construction of the new $150,000 rectory now being built adjacent to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

Co-chairman of the drive are David Cooper and Robert Harlem. Honorary co-chairmen are Joseph P. Molinari and Ambrose Boland.

The new rectory is designed to provide quarters for six priests, and three offices for the parish will be on the first floor. In addition, there will be rooms for two domestics.
