Aug. 10, 1988

Baited fishing lines whirred through the heavy air over Neahwa Park’s Hodges Pond Tuesday evening as about 150 children cast their lines during the annual Oneonta Fishing Derby.

The event is co-sponsored by the Oneonta Youth Bureau and the city recreation department.

Brothers Don and Bob Stanley won their fights with nine and seven-pound carp and captured the largest fish awards for their age groups. Another brother, Steve Stanley, placed second in his age group with  a two-pound fish. This is the second year the Stanley brothers have won awards at the event.

Aug. 10, 1063

With clamor, glamour, and aplomb, an estimated 140 children at the Chestnut Street School playground staged and applauded a one ring circus Friday afternoon.

Featured were Tarzan fighting a crocodile.

Two clown acts, baton twirlers and a battle between Sitting Bull and three cowboys.

Sitting Bull, Joseph Dellelo, 3½ won the encounter, gunning down his brother David, David Wiltsey and David Scott.

Timothy Leggett, strong man did his stuff with a real homemade barbell, and fatman David Babbitt stumbled out to do the twist. he had to be helped into the ring by a small spectator because he kept tripping over his stomach.

With Jokes an asides, Joseph Anderson, 19, of 167½ Chestnut St., masterfully emceed the show and later sang country music to his own accompaniment on the autoharp. Joe will enter his last year at the Batavia School for the Blind this September.

Proceeds from the circus will be used for “a wing-ding of a wienee roast,’ in Wilber Park Wednesday, Playground Leader Mrs. Owen B. Williams reporter.
