ANDES — Judge M. Lynn Bruce used to sit in an easy chair in the parlor of his mansion, watching his grandchildren swing on the velvet drapes in the hallway. Finally, enough was enough and he would lift his massive body from the chair and the children would scurry upstairs.

That was about 70 years ago. The same easy chair is still there facing the same drapes. In fact, the furniture and fixtures throughout the entire house are so undisturbed a visitor expects the footfalls in the hallway to be the judge himself.

It’s not. It’s Ron Guichard.

Guichard wants to resurrect not the famous judge, but his fine, historic house on Main Street, returning it to its original grandeur and creating an elegant bed-and-breakfast stop in the process.

Duncan Ballantine built the mansion in 1854.

Bruce was a state court judge and lieutenant governor under Theodore Roosevelt, before the famous Rough Rider became president.

At his Andes mansion, the judge wanted to “emulate the lavishness of Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill house,” said Guichard.

“We’re going to turn it back into a residence with, hopefully, an opportunity to make it a bed-and-breakfast,” said Guichard. “Then, the public can see it as it is supposed to be.”
