Students in area schools have been preparing to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States this week.

“It’s essential that children know about the Constitution and particularly about the freedoms we enjoy,” said Dale Bellino, principal at Greater Plains Elementary School in Oneonta.

Some Oneonta teachers will lead their classes in a “Celebration of Leadership,” a day-long “teach-in” Wednesday — the day before the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. Teachers will tune in to a television broadcast so that their students may join more than 66 million citizens nationwide in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

In the nationwide broadcast, President Reagan will lead students and other citizens in the Pledge of Allegiance, and former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger will read and explain the meaning of the Constitution’s Preamble, according to the Constitution Bicentennial Commission.

At Oneonta Junior High School, students will read the Preamble over the intercom, and students will dress in patriotic colors. Studying the Constitution and how it was written helps students understand American history, said Samuel Sandoli, social studies teacher.

“They should appreciate our heritage,” he said. “It’s the oldest Constitution in the world.”
