GREENE — Gerald Zimmerman said he has four things to say when he tours New York state towns telling people of his experiences with a radioactive waste dump.

“I encourage people to use their political representatives,” he said. “I encourage people to use whatever local resources they have. I encourage people not to take promises at face value. And I encourage people to look at other alternatives to nuclear power.”

Zimmerman is a member of the Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Waste. His boyhood town of West Valley, 30 miles north of Olean in western New York, has been battling New York state and the federal government for over a quarter century to have a leaking, radioactive waste dump cleaned up.

Zimmerman will be speaking to Chenango County residents today at 8 p.m. at Greene High School. Two Chenango County sites have been picked among eight others state-wide as possible sites for a low level radioactive waste dump.
