ALBANY — The state has unveiled plans for development of a 625-acre public park on Lake Otsego and assigned it a high construction priority because of the Otsego County area’s “deficiency in public park facilities.”

A report released yesterday by Gov. Rockefeller shows that the land — called Glimmerglass State Park — has already been acquired at a cost of $228,535. Estimated cost of development has not been given, but detailed design work might be started next year, depending on budget allocations to be disclosed tomorrow.

The park — part of the state’s $100 million parks program authorized by voters in 1960 and 1962 — is located on the northeast end of Lake Otsego near Mount Wellington and Shadow Brook.

The preliminary design shows a 5,000 foot crescent of sand beach and a beach house at Hyde Bay.

Also proposed are two campsite developments, two areas for picnicking, a cabin area, and a marina at the point where Shadow Brook enters the lake. Three paved parking lots are also planned.

Residents of the area will also have access to another state facility planned near the Otsego County border in Chenango County.

The Hunt’s Pond Campsite in Chenango consists of 1,710 acres acquired at a cost of $127,900.

In all, the state has purchased more than 292,000 acres of recreation land since 1961. More has been bought by local governments with state help.
