SIDNEY — The village of Sidney learned Thursday that it will become the first community in the state to have fiber optic telephone cables connected directly to homes and businesses when the Continental Telephone Co. installs the equipment later this year.

Robert W. Zinnecker, president of Contel of New York, gave the news to village officials and business leaders Thursday afternoon.

“No one in New York state has ever done what we’re about to do in Sidney,” he said.

Previous use of fiber optics by Contel has carried only long-distance telephone calls and not connected cables directly to homes and businesses, Zinnecker said.

The project is slated to cost about $1.14 million, or about $900,000 more than conventional copper wiring, according to Frances Rivett, a spokesman for the state Public Service Commission.

Oneonta’s municipal services have been prepared to meet expansion of State University College and Hartwick College, according to C.M. Taylor, director of Public Service.

Mr. Taylor’s statement followed announcement of a $21.9 million expansion program involving 16 new buildings, announced by SUCO officials last week.

Mr. Taylor said that in anticipation of college growth, the city has upgraded its sewer and water facilities to meet the increased demands.

He said that, beginning in 1962, city planners had studied possible expansion programs anticipated by both colleges.

It was estimated that expansion of SUCO would require an additional 80 million gallons of water per year and the growth of Hartwick would boost the demand to an estimated 100 million gallons.
