Oneonta High School youngsters have expressed a strong desire for (and a willingness to pay part of) an outdoor diving pool in one of the city parks.

A diving pool has been the dream of the Parks Board for more than 30 years.

The student opinion was released Tuesday by OHS Student Council president Joseph Costa. The student organization recently polled student reaction to a proposed “Youth Work Week” to help support the project. The proposal was first made last fall by current Parks Board Chairman Harold Keen.

A questionnaire, to be filled out and left unsigned by the students, explained what a work week would be and asked eight questions.

Ninety per cent of the students who returned the form (about 720 of the 800 students at OHS) indicated they think a new outdoor diving pool of greater depth than the present one (swimming pool in Wilber Park) would be a worthwhile addition to Oneonta’s recreational facilities.

Eighty-four per cent (about 672 students) indicated they think the idea of a work week to help raise money for this pool is a good idea.

The questionnaire defines the work week as: requiring “the participation of the student help raise money for a new outdoor diving pool in Oneonta.

“For one week during the Spring, the Student Council will canvass Oneonta homeowners and draw up a list of odd jobs that need to be done. Students who have signed up to assist with ‘Work Week’ will be asked to perform these jobs and contribute whatever they are paid to a general ‘Work Week Fund.’ At the end of the week, the money will be turned over to the city government with the stipulation that it is to be used only for the diving pool.”
