COOPERSTOWN — Jane Johngren of Hartwick will be honored by the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the 1988 Community Service Award.

She will be honored at a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Fenimore House, Lake Road, Cooperstown.

Mrs. Johngren was chosen for the award in recognition of her many years of involvement in community activities, according to chamber member Richard McCaffery. He said the award is presented to an individual or organization who has advanced the economic, cultural and civic welfare of the Cooperstown community. “Mrs. Johngren has certainly earned this distinction,” McCaffery said.

Mrs. Johngren said, “It’s been fun and I’ve learned a lot.”

She has been active in the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary, the Cooperstown School-Community Association, The Glimmerglass Opera, Redskins Booster Club, Otsego County Tourism Bureau, the Concert Series, The Cooperstown Bicentennial Committee, The Red Cross, Project Prom and Kid City.

Mrs. Johngren joins previous award recipients Thomas Goodyear, John J. O’Connell, Nicholas J. Sterling, Lake and Valley Garden Club, Ruth Davidson, Arthur J. Goddard, Cooperstown Emergency Squad, Clark Scholarship Foundation, Scriven Foundation, William E.Ross, Cooperstown Fire Department, and Lester G. Bursey.

A glimpse into the violent world of professional football through the eyes of a man who has been at it since 1958 revealed Thursday that world is peopled by big men who play hard and think gently.

This is the reaction gleaned from a quiet talk with Dick Lynch, New York Giant defensive halfback who spoke to 200 at the Elks Club Father and Son dinner last night.

A highlight of the dinner was the announcement that Phil Meagley won the Elks Trophy as the most valuable member of the OHS basketball team during the season just over.
