Chris McCarthy of Norwich operated an earthmover as ground was broken at the Pony Farm Industrial park for the Otsego County Industrial Development Agency’s $450,000 industrial incubator. The 19,200-square-foot building, which is scheduled to be open for occupancy Feb. 1, is being constructed by the Sabotka Co.

The sometimes heavy rain of the last few days can take credit for just one thing: making life a trifle more miserable for those outdoors.

As far as solving or even beginning to solve the water shortage in places like Oneonta, it was just another drop in the bucket.

Of course Oneonta has an assured auxiliary supply being pumped from the Susquehanna River so there’s no emergency as far as use is concerned. But for replenishing the lost supply in the reservoir, nothing in sight will help.

“What we need is the tail end of a hurricane,” suggests C.M. Taylor, director of public service. “Of course,” adds Mr. Taylor, quickly, “that’s providing it wouldn’t hurt somebody. We just need a deluge to draw even.”

The reason steady rains such as we’ve had the last few days don’t help much is that the Oneonta reservoir drains from a watershed of only three square miles. Mr. Taylor points out that the Susquehanna, by comparison, has a watershed of about 900 square miles just in its short flow between Cooperstown and Oneonta.

The estimate on the actual state of the Oneonta reservoir Friday is that it contains 100 million gallons. That’s only about 20 percent of capacity. It holds 470 million gallons.

Mr. Taylor guesses the water level in the large reservoir is down about 140 inches.
