Shortly after midnight Thursday, Jordon A. Wallen made his debut at Chenango Memorial Hospital, making him the first baby born during 1988 in The Daily Star’s circulation area.

Tasha Marie Ramos was born four hours later at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, the first baby born this year in Otsego County. A girl, born later in the afternoon at Fox Hospital in Oneonta, was the third new arrival.

Jordon weighed eight pounds, nine ounces when born at 12:22 a.m., four days after his due date, said father James Wallen of Norwich. The dark-haired baby is “doing great” and looks like both sides of the family.

Born at 4:06 a.m., Tasha weighed seven pounds, three ounces. Her arrival was not much of a surprise because she was expected on Dec. 29, said her mother, Wendy Ramos of Maryland.

“She’s fine,” she said. “She’s been sleeping a lot.”

The baby looks more like her father, Angel, with black hair and a dark complexion, said her mother.

The Hospital in Sidney and Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton did not report any New Year’s Day babies.

Get a horse!

The cry that used to irritate motorists in the early days of the automobile echoed again across Otsdawa country Tuesday.

The reason? A horse owned by Maurice Crawford was called out to rescue cars stalled on a road just off the Otsdawa Road near West Oneonta by slippery driving conditions.

Last word was the horse was still going strong, needed no anti-freeze and didn’t have to be warmed up for 20 minutes before going into action on this wintry day.
