SIDNEY — Parking meters previously hated by drivers were gobbled up by consumers Friday and Monday, according to Sidney village officials.

Sixty-five of the de-commissioned meters were sold at $5 a piece since sales began Friday at 8 a.m. An undetermined number of parking-meter posts also were sold for $2 each. All money will go to the village’s general fund.

Close to 100 meters were stored away in the Sidney Civil Center, but some were determined to be unsalvageable and were not sold. Most of the 65 were sold Friday.

A spokeswoman said the village probably should have limited each customer to one meter each.

She said some buyers walked off with as many as four.

Those buying the meters planned to install them in their driveways, on their mantles or on top of bars in taverns, the spokeswoman said. She said one man planned to give a meter to his father as a wedding gift while another wanted to install one in a field where teen-agers were apparently parking.
