COOPERSTOWN — Otsego County’s political parties will be looking in the next couple weeks for a candidate for county clerk since learning that June B. Hotaling will resign from the post after 14 years. Hotaling, 62, recently announced her resignation effective at midnight Friday, Sept. 16, because of declining health. Her term would have expired in 1991.

She will recommend her deputy, Charlotte Koniuto, take over the position until a new clerk is elected or appointed by the governor. If no candidate is put on the November ballot, Gov. Mario Cuomo, a Democrat, would appoint a successor.

But chairmen of the two Otsego County parties said they expect to find a successor. “One person has expressed interest,” said Guy Rathbun, chairman of the county GOP. He declined to give the name until the potential candidate makes a formal announcement.

Democratic Chairman William Schebaum said his party does not have anyone in mind yet for clerk but will “assess the scene and make a decision” at the next meeting.

He said the Democrats might fair better if the next clerk is appointed by Cuomo rather than face general election in the heavily Republican county.

Mrs. Hotaling said, “The job is very demanding. I’ve spent a lot of hours at it.”

Split sessions for Center Street school kindergartners were announced Wednesday night by School Supt. Harold V. Hager.

The split sessions, with half the classes holding morning sessions and the other half meting in the afternoon, was found to be necessary, Dr. Hager said, when it became apparent that one Center Street kindergarten had 41 pupils and the other had 42.
