Step Back in Time: Sept. 12, 2013

Dr. Hager told the Board of Education at the monthly session Wednesday that there were two basic causes for the overcrowding of kindergartens at Center Street where other classes average less than 30 pupils per class.

One reason he cited for the high kindergarten population was the influx into that area of many families connected with the colleges, many of them with small children.

The other basic factor in creating the overcrowding of the kindergartens was that pre-first grade pupils who will be withdrawn from public schools and enter first grade at St. Mary’s school are sent to kindergarten at Center Street.

The change at Center Street, with a total increase of 22 pupils over last year, was revealed as school authorities reviewed school enrollments for 1963-64.

Other figures showed an increase of 50 elementary school pupils over the preceding year; a decrease of 45 students at Junior High School, and an increase of 80 pupils at Senior High school for a total overall increase of 85 students and a total school population of 3,170 in the city school system.
