SIDNEY — Pietro “Pete” Basile said his new restaurant enjoyed good business on its first day of operation Tuesday, almost six months to the day after his Nina’s Restaurant was destroyed in a Main Street blaze.

“Pietro’s Restaurant” opened Tuesday at Basile’s new Sidney Mall on Cartwright Avenue. He said he invited the Sidney Fire Department to a pre-opening celebration Sunday, with about 100 people attending.

Basile’s 4,500 square-foot restaurant has 13 tables and two luncheon counters. He has 10 workers and will be hiring more, he said.

Pietro’s will be similar to Nina’s, Basile said, though the buffet and salad bar have been eliminated. Pietro’s will also have more typically American food in addition to its Italian food, Basile said.

Basile’s 11,000 square foot Sidney Mall is about half filled. Jericho Travel Center, based in Bainbridge, will be opening a second office at the mall, and other commercial enterprises expected at the mall include an ice cream parlor and possibly a jewelry store, Basile said.

Assessed values of real property in the City of Oneonta are up more than a quarter of a million dollars over last year, according to the annual tax rolls that go on public display this morning at City Hall.

Significant factors in the increase are the assessments charged against two new motels; a cut in the exemptions brought about through the sale of property by veterans, and a boost in the special franchise levies of utilities and railroad property.

The rolls, that are opened to the public at the City Clerk’s office this morning, show total assessed valuation of all real property in the city to be $20,394,518. This is a $288,140 hike over the 1963 total of $20,106,378.

City Assessors, who previewed the tax rolls, explained the hike by pointing out a sizable number of new homes had been built in the area. They noted in particular new homes in the Grant Hamm development, Eastland Heights, and the Ravine Park area, and two new homes each in the First and Sixth wards.

Two new motels, neither of them completed, also add assessed values to the city’s tax base.
