Street Talk for January 05, 2009

January 05, 2009 07:39 am

Question of the week: Given the national economic situation, are you more worried about your finances than in previous years?

With the way the economy is going, its dragging me under.

It’s happening to everybody. Now e v e r y t h i n g ’ s gone up way too much.”

— Brian Musarelli, machinist, Bainbridge

“I’m actually not, because I have a very secure job that pays good money. I feel like that this is the best-paying job in all of the years I’ve worked. I’m not worried about it at all.”

— Amy Beers, retail sales consultant, Laurens.

“Yes. I guess so, because you are worried about the stock market, and businesses going out of business. You worry about these things.

Especially like me, I work for small contractors. Business is OK now, but if people aren’t going to be able to pay for renovations and things like that, I’ll be out of a job too.”

— Christopher Clark, construction management, Delhi

“Definitely, yes, because I was planning on retiring this year. But now I’m going to have to work longer because of my finances. I’m hoping for it to get better.”

— Wayne Hubbell, set-up operator, Oxford

“I’m really not because of the situation with gas. All of the things you think about from day to day like gas and things like that are lower now than I’ve seen in years. That was a big thing for me in the summer, $4.25 a gallon and I commute 60 miles each way to work. Seeing $1.60 is quite inviting to me so that actually helps. I don’t feel any tension. And where I work isn’t in jeopardy.”

— Liz Revald, store manager, Utica

“Yes. I definitely have taken time to save and pay attention to the needs instead of the wants.’’

— Carol Arnold, senior programming analyst, Oneonta
